Left ventricular hypertrophy in chronic kidney disease: A diagnostic criteria comparison.

2020

Background and aims: CKD patients have a high prevalence of LVH and this leads to an increase of cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left ventricular geometry in a group of 293 hypertensive patients with stage 2–5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared with 289 essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function. Methods and results: All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Patients on stage 1 CKD, dialysis treatment, or with cardiovascular diseases were excluded. LVH was observed in 62.8% of patients with CKD and in 51.9% of essential hypertensive patients (P < 0.0001). We found increasingl…

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PLASMA ALDOSTERONE LEVELS AND LEFT VENTRICULAR MASS AND GEOMETRY IN ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS: DOES SEX MATTER?

2019

Introduction: Experimental evidence suggested that aldosterone can cause myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis. However, previous studies on the association between plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and left ventricular (LV) mass (LVM) and geometry, in subjects without primary aldosteronism yielded conflicting results. Aim: To evaluate the relationships of PAC with LV mass and geometry in patients with essential hypertension (EH), and to assess the influence of gender on these relationships. Methods: We enrolled 478 subjects (men: 63%; mean age 44 ± 12 years) with untreated EH. The measurements included 24-h blood pressures, plasma renin activity (PRA) and PAC, obtained by radioimmunoass…

Plasma aldosterone and its relationship with left ventricular mass in hypertensive patients with early-stage chronic kidney disease

2014

Plasma aldosterone concentrations (PACs) are often increased in the advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, PAC has not been fully investigated in early CKD. Moreover, little is known about the relationship between aldosteronemia and left ventricular (LV) mass in subjects with mild-to-moderate CKD. The study objectives were to analyze PAC, LV mass (LVM), LV geometry and their relationships, in a group of hypertensive patients with stage I-III CKD. One hundred ninety-five hypertensive patients with stage I-III CKD were enrolled and compared with a control group of 82 hypertensive patients without renal dysfunction. LVM was higher in subjects with CKD than in the control gro…

Left ventricular hypertrophy and geometry in hypertensive patients with chronic kidney disease.

2009

To evaluate the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left ventricular geometry in a group of 293 hypertensive patients with stage 2-5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared with 289 essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function. All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Patients on stage 1 CKD, dialysis treatment, or with cardiovascular diseases were excluded.LVH was observed in 47.1% of patients with CKD and in 31.14% of essential hypertensive patients (P0.0001). We found increasingly higher left ventricular diameters, thicknesses, and mass from stage 2 to 5 CKD. Distribution of concentric and eccentric LVH was not different between the two groups. H…

Antihypertensive and cardiovascular effects of combined blockade of renin-angiotensin system with ACE inhibitor and angiotensin II type 1 receptor bl…

2006

BACKGROUND.: In this study the effects of 24 weeks losartan and ramipril treatment, both alone and in combination, on blood pressure and left ventricular mass (LVM) and function, have been evaluated in hypertensives. METHODS.: 57 hypertensives with stage 1 and 2 essential hypertension were included. After 4 weeks run in, a randomized double-blind, 3 arm, double dummy, independent trial was used. All patients were randomly allocated to 3 treatment arms consisting of losartan (50 mg/daily), ramipril (5 mg/daily), and combined (losartan 50 mg/ramipril 5 mg/daily) for 24 weeks. LVM, LVM/h(2.7) and other echocardiographic measurements, BUN, creatinine and clearance and potassium were determined …

Effect of dual blockade of renin-angiotensin system on TGF beta 1 and left ventricular structure and function in hypertensive patients

2007

The effects of 24 weeks losartan and ramipril treatment, both alone and in combination, on left ventricular mass (LVM), circulating transforming growth factor b1(TGFb1), procollagen type I (PIP) and III (PIIIP), havebeen evaluated in hypertensive (HT) patients. A total of 57 HT with stage 1 and 2 essential hypertension were included. After 4 weeks run in, a randomized double blind, three arms, double dummy, independent trial was used. All HT patients were randomly allocated to three treatment arms consisting of losartan (50 mg/daily),ramipril (5 mg/ daily) and combined (losartan 50 mg/daily plus ramipril 5 mg/daily) for 24 weeks. Influence of geometric variations on LV activation times: A study on an atlas-based virtual population

2010

We present the fully automated pipeline we have developed to obtain electrophysiological simulations of the heart on a large atlas-based virtual population. This virtual population was generated from a statistical model of left ventricular geometry, represented by a surface model. Correspondence between tetrahedralized volumetric meshes was obtained using Thin Plate Spline warps. Simulations are based on the fast solving of Eikonal equations, and stimulation sites correspond to physiological activation. We report variations of total activation time introduced by geometry, as well as variations in the location of last activation. The obtained results suggest that the total activation time ha…

The elite judo female athlete's heart.

2022

Purpose: There is a paucity of data on physiological heart adaptation in elite-level judo female athletes. This study aimed to assess left ventricular morphology and function in highly trained elite female judokas. Methods: The study prospectively included 18 females aged 23.5 ± 2.25 years, nine elite level judokas, and nine healthy non-athlete volunteers. All participants underwent a medical examination, electrocardiogram, and transthoracic 2D echocardiogram. Left ventricular diastolic and systolic diameters and volumes were determined, and parameters of left heart geometry and function (systolic and diastolic) were measured, calculated, and compared between groups. Results: When groups were…

[OP.4B.03] CIRCULATING ALDOSTERONE LEVELS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH CONCENTRIC LEFT VENTRICULAR GEOMETRY IN ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS

2016

OBJECTIVE: Sound evidence indicates that aldosterone has a fundamental role in determining functional and structural changes in the heart. Moreover, it has been observed that high plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) is related to the development of congestive heart failure and to cardiovascular mortality. However, previous studies on the association between circulating aldosterone levels and left ventricular (LV) mass (LVM) and LV geometry, in subjects without primary aldosteronism yielded conflicting results. The aim of our study was to evaluate in patients with essential hypertension the relationships of PAC with LV mass and geometry, and to asses the influence of gender on these relat…
